Dancing has been a Jewish way of expressing joy since Biblical times.
Israeli folk dancing was brought to Israel by the early settlers, who left their urban European lives in order to start a new agricultural life in the land of Israel (Palestine at the time). Israeli folk dance reflects the return of the people to their land.
Today Israeli folk dancing has spread beyond the borders of Israel and can be found all over the world in Europe, South America, the United States, Canada, Australia, and even Japan.
