The Aztec Empire and its many highly developed subject populations had numerous wind instruments, including fiddle flutes, panpipes and various types of trumpets; there was also a wide range of percussion instruments and xylophones.
The flute, which reached its most varied and complete development in this part of the world, was also much cultivated in Peru; indeed the melancholy sound of the quena flute was so evocative that the Spanish ecclesiastical authorities attempted to prevent its use.
