The roots of Chassidic music lay in Eastern Europe of the 19th century. The Chassidim composed melodies to words from the scriptures in order to express their admiration for their Rabbi. These were usually performed in the courts of the Admur, in the presence of many Chassidim, who while singing, would dance and sway with the beat of the music.
During the second half of the 20th century, the popularity of Chassidic music rose among the Jews primarily in Israel and the United States.
